Hindu Symbolism: Lord Vishnu
At Chinmaya Mission Bala Vihar we are learning about the different forms of God and the symbolism of each. Over the next few months we will publish a series on this topic; so, please be sure to check back each month to learn more.
As with all pujas, last month we began the series with Lord Ganesha who is the remover of obstacles and the bestower of wisdom. This month we will meditate on the form of Lord Vishnu. Sri Vishnu is often referred to as the sustainer or preserver of the universe. Keeping that in mind, let us study His beautiful form.
LORD VISHNU
| Four Arms | The four arms of Lord Vishnu express His domination over the four directions of space (north, south, east, and west). It also symbolizes the four stages of human life (brahmacharya, grihastha, vanaprashtha, and sanyasa). Another interpretation is that His arms represent the four aims of life (dharma, artha, kama, and moksha). Likewise, it is said that His four arms represent the four Vedas (Rig, Sama, Yajur, and Atharva). And, the final interpretation is that Sri Vishnu’s four arms represent the four classes of personality (brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya, and shudra). |
| Conch (Shanka) | Sri Vishnu’s conch symbolizes the creative voice; the scared AUM or the "Pranava" that pervades all space. The conch has the form of a multiple spiral evolving from one point into ever increasing spheres; it thus denotes eternity. |
| Disc (Chakra) | The chakra is identified with the human mind; the thoughts like the chakra flow faster than even the mightiest wind. Sri Vishnu’s disc is used to destroy evil tendencies so that one can start afresh. |
| Lotus (Padma) | Lord Vishnu’s lotus indicates the final goal of human evolution. The lotus has its roots in mud, but it expresses as purity. Likewise, a devotee though rooted in a seemingly imperfect world seeks out Self-Perfection. |
| Mace (Gada) | The mace represents the power of time. Just as nothing can conquer time, the mace too is unconquerable and destroys those who oppose it. It is used by Sri Vishnu to humbly strengthen us. |
| Blue Body | Sri Vishnu’s blue color signifies the infinite expansion of the blue sky and the blue ocean thereby signifying his infinite stature. |
| Yellow Clothes | Yellow represents the earth. Sri Vishnu who is blue in color and clothed in yellow therefore represents the descent of the Infinite to the earth. |
| Crown | The crown on Sri Vishnu's head signifies His supreme sovereignty over the universe. He is the one who protects all. |
